Supporting the Architecture of the Developing Brain Through Observation
Maria Montessori was a physician and anthropologist who dedicated her work to the systematic observation of human development. Through these observations, she witnessed the unfolding of the whole person; an emergence that occurs largely beyond conscious awareness, which she referred to as a “mystery.”
She noted that the order perceived by children differs markedly from that of adults, and her careful study of children revealed consistent characteristics such as independence, concentrated engagement, sustained focus, purposeful repetition, and an absence of fatigue. Montessori maintained that, in order to truly understand the infant, one must observe and follow the child, attending closely to their outward manifestations.
This workshop will examine the foundational principles of observation and discuss practical tools designed to support and inform professional practice.
