Event description

1) Bringing Curiosity into the Classroom: Inspirations from Architecture and creating in 3-D

This is the first in our 3 part Series Bringing Curiosity into the Classroom, a new workshop series on bringing community dialogue to ignite classroom creativity.  Local experts, innovators, and dynamic thinkers join us to impact education by fostering our curiosity and creating inspiring learning for young children. This is a chance to dialogue across disciplines as we hear about inspirations, methods, and strategies from our virtuosos. Theory becomes practice as we then take the opportunity to work with materials from the fields. Malaguzzi and the educators of Reggio Emilia challenge us to look outside the classroom for new ways to invigorate our curiosity and provide new perspectives and insights so we can do "nothing without joy."

We invite the community to join in exploring and enriching how we see these contributions from across disciplines influence the cultural and educational fabric of our schools

Presented by: Paul Locke

Paul Locke is a licensed architect and designer with over 20 years of experience. The majority of those years were spent working with the architect Frank Gehry. As an associate at Gehry Partners, he collaborated on such projects as the Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi, the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, the Dwight Eisenhower Memorial in Washington D.C., the Battersea Power Station Residences in London, and Frank Gehry’s Residence in Rustic Canyon. A year ago, Paul embarked on a new chapter and started his own practice, Locke Studio, where he focuses on residential and commercial projects in and around the Los Angeles area.

  • Join us as Paul sparks our curiosity in a dialogue about his work in architecture and the applications it might have for working in a Reggio Emilia-inspired classroom. Together we will consider:
  • How can we take into account the principles of human-centered design when we think about our spaces and materials?
  • What kinds of interesting challenges can we create with unconventional materials that support flexibility, collaboration, reflection and interactive design?
  • How can we iterate and translate ideas through various materials?
  • How do construction and manipulating material forms to enhance various literacies encourage exploration and expression, collaborations, and new perspectives?
