Event description

In this face-to-face hands-on workshop participants will:

• Learn how to perform a variety of experiments and investigations for the Year 11 Biology syllabus:

  • Fieldwork
  • Diffusion and Osmosis
  • Surface area to volume ratio
  • The effect of enzymes on biological reactions
  • Other first-hand investigations in the syllabus including, microscopes and scaled diagrams, transects, quadrats, capture recapture and the optional experiments of testing for starch and photosynthesis
  • Modelling the fluid mosaic model
  • Data Analysis
  • Highlighting important research strategies and skills

• Assess the risk for each activity and identify the appropriate safety measures
• Experience first-hand how to use the equipment effectively
• Acquire appropriate and varied pedagogies for experimental Biology
• Explore the use of simulations that add value to teaching and learning experiments
• Unpack ‘Working Scientifically’ skills
• Identify varied opportunities for ‘Depth Studies’

NESA Accreditation

Completing Experiments for Year 11 Biology Teachers will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and Assessment of NSW Curriculum/EYLF addressing standard descriptor 2.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

A Certificate of Completion will be sent to Graduate Teachers for their evidence

Workshop Delivered by Lauren Hesse

Lauren Hesse is passionate about education and working with both students and teachers to improve their understanding of themselves as learners. She has eleven years teaching experience and has taught students from diverse social backgrounds, with a range of different abilities. Lauren works at Hunter School of Performing Arts in Newcastle, where she teaches Biology and Science Extension. She has extensive marking experience in Biology, including as a Senior Marker. Lauren is excited to share her experiences and skills with teachers and students through our professional learning workshops. ​
