In a time when the brain and body are changing rapidly, and young people are actively seeking guidance on how to behave, fit in, and belong, how can we help them find the models they need in a healthy way? Adolescence is a period of consolidation and experimentation — a time when they’re gathering everything they’ve learned about human interactions, testing what feels useful, and trying on new ways of being. Because their reward systems mature earlier than the parts of the brain that handle long-term planning, much of this exploration is focused on short-term personal or peer-related benefits. As their prefrontal cortex strengthens and their ability to think ahead grows, they begin to see further and consider broader perspectives. In the meantime, how can we make the most of their growing desire to act in a more adult way?
