16 Days of Activism: Bystander Action Panel - Real World Responses to Gender Inequality

An online, interactive workshop, drawing on real world examples of activism in media, politics and beyond, with a particular focus on the Loddon Mallee Region. 

Presentations:

You will have the opportunity to hear about bystander action in the following contexts from each of our three panelists:

-Bystander Action in Media – Nicole Ferrie, Centre for Non Violence

-Bystander Action through Digital Storytelling - Emma Brentnall, Campaspe Primary Care Partnership

-Bystander Action in Politics – Cr. Helen Healy, Mildura

Break Out Rooms:

WHLM will facilitate three breakout rooms encouraging conversation and promoting actions we can take in our day to day lives. Participants will have the opportunity to draw on panelists' knowledge and experience.

Note:
Upon registration you will be asked to rank your choice of break out rooms.  These will be allocated on a first in, first serve basis with a maximum of 20 participants per break out room.

Speaker Bios

Cr. Helen Healy - Mildura
Cr Helen Healy grew up in Ouyen, has 73 first cousins and her family have been in the Mallee over 100 years. She is an Arts and Cultural Engagement consultant, having produced over 300 events across Australia including major events in the Mildura region and a major cultural program for the Centenary of Canberra. She has twice been a finalist for the Australian Event Manager of the Year and is a former Victorian Government Small Business Regional Hero. Cr Healy recently completed a Masters in Cultural Leadership and the Australian Institute of Company Directors course and belongs to many local groups including Gender Equity Action Sunraysia. In her current term she is focussing on gender equality benefits for men, women and children; future proofing with sustainable practices and renewable energies; events and tourism driven economies and civic pride - most especially in respect for Council and beautifying our region. 


Emma Brentnall, Executive Officer, Campaspe Primary Care Partnership Emma is an experienced partnership broker with a strong health promotion foundation having worked in cross sector partnerships and community health throughout her career. Emma’s role at Campaspe PCP supports local place-based approaches to engage with community groups and service provider networks including the Campaspe Family Violence Action Group.


Nicole Ferrie, Head of Media and Communications Centre for Non-Violence
An experienced journalist, editor, manager, advocate and community engagement specialist, Nicole was previously editor of central Victoria’s daily newspaper, the Bendigo Advertiser. A multi-award winning journalist, her work has long been acknowledged for helping change community attitudes - in particular around gender inequality. Her acknowledgements include an Our Watch Walkley Foundation award on reporting on violence against women and children.

Nicole has held positions on several committees and boards, including the national Our Watch Media Advisory Board and national Mindframe Media Advisory board, and has presented locally and internationally - including at parallel events at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.
