2x2: The Second Exhibition by Blok Modular x Vokes and Peters
Event description
For one day, we are converting our modular factory into a gallery space and invite you to our second exhibition: 2x2 by Blok Modular x Vokes and Peters.
Following last year’s Exhibition 1:1 we are opening our modular factory to the public on Saturday 22nd of March to exhibit a new compact two-storey house comprised of 4 modules + a studio module. After the exhibition they will be delivered to Magnetic Island and installed (in one day) on a narrow beach site around a central courtyard.
Our architects and construction team have worked closely to manufacture a house which controls cost and time, reduces waste and the impacts of pollution, noise and disruption to the sensitive ecosystem at its future site in Picnic Bay.
To experience a 1:1 scale model of a house within the limits of a larger host building is not only compelling (due to our fascination with the miniature), but also challenges our perception of traditional building and product manufacturing. With the demonstration house isolated as a discreet cultural artefact, the viewer is encouraged to imagine occupancy and the presence of a setting.
The Blok x Vokes and Peters collab have been working together since 2017, producing over 80 different prototype modular house designs. These projects explore the relationship between modular construction as a future procurement model and an architecture that responds to a societal shift toward more agile housing - one that better enables shared tenure models, multi-generational living, short-term accommodation, and aging in place.
In 2024 the team won an Institute of Architects State Award (NSW), a commendation at Houses Awards, and a Good Design Award.
Blok's founding director and principal architect, Daniel Burnett, will present the work at 12pm and 2pm.
The factory will be open from 11am - 4pm. We look forward to welcoming you to our latest project!
