Event description

A special 2-for-1 deal runs in Term 1 (until Wed 9 April), for this class only. Come with a friend/whanau member and it is $10 for 2 (equates to $5 each). You can buy your first entry through Humanitix to this class to use with a companion - if you are new to us - so that can be one payment of $10 from one of you - that way, both of you do not have to go on to the site and spend $5 each.

After that, it is $110 for an 11-class concession card from Shraddha Yoga and Meditation, with just 1 click for the 2 of you each session ... note that a card does not expire, so continue to use it in Term 2 when it returns to our normal excellent rate of $10 each per session!

An inspiring hatha yoga class on Wednesdays from 5.30 until 6.45 pm. One of our 75-minute weekly general hatha yoga classes - asana (postures/exercises), pranayama (specialized breathing techniques), yoga nidra (deep relaxation).

It is  BRAND NEW in 2025.

Expertly facilitated by Rishi in the LOUNGE at the St John's Church Centre (the Golden Church), 145-149 Kamo Rd, Kensington, Whangarei. You can park in the car parking spots behind the buildings and enter through the outside door for the lounge - on the right of you - to then directly come into the lounge (you do not need to go into the corridor first).

The tutor, Rishi Iyer, has a BMus (hons), specializing in classical singing. Growing up in a yogic environment, he decided to attend a series of week long sessions, with follow up study and practice required after each one, to obtain a RYT 200 Yoga teaching qualification from Prema-Heart Yoga School at Ritual Yoga on Waiheke Island, Hauraki Gulf in 2022. He had also attended classes with yoga teachers when studying at Waikato University. Over the past 8 years, he has worked with Swami Anandaradha Saraswati (Radhe) in the Northland classes and workshops, teaching all of the 6 classes run per week by Shraddha Yoga and Meditation in 2024. He also attends other yoga retreats and workshops regularly each year to continue learning through yoga. Both Rishi and Radhe were at the Satyananda Yoga Lifestyle Immersion weekend with Swami Ratnashakti from Monghyr, India held at Aio Wira Retreat, 10-12 January, 2025. Having a father who is Brahmin from India, Rishi seems to have also inherited an ability with pronunciation of Sanskrit, probably also helped by becoming proficient in singing in other languages in his classical singing pursuits. He has a particular interest in Sanskrit mantra and kirtan.

Both Radhe and Rishi are trustees of Shraddha Yoga and Meditation, a registered non-profit charitable trust. Donations to the trust of $20 or more are tax deductible.

Yoga can have huge benefits for body, mind and emotions (all benefits are interconnected - hence experienced in no specific order - and sometimes can be noticed in a very obvious way and other times more subtly):

strengthening and toning of muscles (note that stronger abdominal muscles also help the back ... and the back muscles need yogic strengthening, which is a totally different feeling to just having tight back muscles from our normal stresses!);

stretching to reduce over-tight muscles and rotations and bending/stretching movements to increase flexibility in joints (very important for all joints, including the spinal vertebrae);

balance improvement in standing poses, both still and moving (this also transfers to improvement in day-to-day activities, such as walking and turning) and overall enhancement of physical coordination and posture;> energizing and releasing energy blockages;

improved function of the body's systems (skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive);

balance and harmony of mind and emotions;

clarity, focus and peace of mind;

stress release and relaxation;

aiding recovery from injuries/improving healing from illnesses

Whether a complete beginner or someone who has experience in home yoga practice/different yoga classes, you are always very welcome to come along.

All students work at their own level, to suit their individual capabilities and needs. There is no need to go further than what is manageable for you. You will notice improvement over time.

Note that only the $10 first time special for those new to us - which currently can be used for entrance for 2 people - is available on Humanitix. Other options are directly with Shraddha Yoga and Meditation.

Paying for the term is the cheapest option at $9 per class but is only valid for the current term (or what remains of it). If you've booked for the term and there is a Wednesday evening when you cannot come, you can recoup it in different ways, e.g. sell or gift your spot to a friend/whanau for that session (either then or with you when you're back) OR come to another class yourself at any of our other times/venues.

$20 (or $15 with a Community Services Card or Super Gold Card) per class, casual/drop-in. This is very rarely used as concession cards are better value - the 11-class card still remains the most popular and it can be shared with your partner/friend/whanau.

$14 per class on a 5-class concession card ($70).

$10 per class on an 11-class concession card ($110) - currently can be used for 2 people if attending together.

~$9.50 per class for 22 classes ( 2 x 11-class cards for $210).

NO EXPIRY on any concession cards. You can even use these with a partner/whanau/friend/friends.

SPECIALS, if new to us:

(i) $10 casual (cash or internet banking) for the first class if you are new to our classes and want to try it out first, hence are not wanting to go for either the full term payment or any of the concession card options straight up. If you decide after the first week's class to do the remainder of term payment, just pay the difference at the end of that class.

(ii) 5-class card for $55 (no expiry), just for your first purchase of this amount of classes (as this makes it $11 per class, you have probably tried the $10 first class before this, but decided not to go for the term payment, 11-class card or 22-class card).

Please always feel welcome to contact us privately if you need to make a special arrangement to be able to manage to come.

Bring your own yoga mat (or ask us if you need to borrow one of ours), water bottle and a blanket (or cotton/light throw in the summer) for covering yourself during the relaxation.

Note that there is another evening yoga class on Tuesdays at 5.15 pm (it does not have the 2-for-1 special) at the St John's venue in the hall. The lounge has its own entrance door on your right as you head towards where you enter the building from the carpark, whereas to go into the hall use the entrance into the building that is straight in front of you and, once onside in the corridor, you will immediately see the back door into the hall. You are welcome to come to both classes, or whichever one suits you best each week.

Remember that just the Wednesday class at St John's is in the LOUNGE and Tuesday evening's and the 2 morning classes are all in the HALL.
