How human activities exacerbate ecological hazards:

linking pandemics with environmental change

The enormous social and economic toll of COVID-19 has brought vector-borne diseases to the forefront of political agendas around the world. However, long before ‘coronavirus’ entered popular lexicon, researchers have been warning of how land use cover change, coupled with climate change and rapid urbanisation, are exacerbating the risk of disease outbreaks and pandemics. This keynote presents an overview of current research linking human activities and emerging infectious diseases, including case studies from around the world. The keynote also highlights the ways in which we can learn from the experience of COVID-19 to turn society toward more socially, economically and environmentally sustainable ways of production, consumption and landscape management.
