Event description

A fun, one-day meet up of letterpress printers, printmakers, typographers, graphic designers, book artists, or people who just want to try something new! The day includes demos, print workshops on vintage presses and talks… All are welcome - no prior printing history required.

THE DETAILS

Date: Saturday 28th May 2022

Time: 9:30am to 4:00pm

Location: Bright Press, located in the Village section within Whiteman Park. Enter via Beechboro Rd (enter from Hepburn Ave) or Drumpellier Dr (aka the old Lord St).

Join us for our annual one-day event where we celebrate all things letterpress printing and everything print related. This year, we have the following guest speakers:

- Kate Webb (@shmamgram) is sharing about alternative methods and materials that can be used to extend boundaries of artistic processes and of her printmaking journey thus far, including her recent experience as the North Metro TAFE Graphic Design Artist in Residence;

- The team from Overtime Design, hand-lettering and mural specialists, will be sharing how they create and deliver large-scale permanent artworks that activate and engage the surrounding architecture, environment and community;

- Kate Parker, Curator of Revolutions Transport Museum will be presenting some of the letterpress printed ephemera including catalogues and blueprints that Lew Whiteman (Whiteman Park's namesake) collected throughout his life, in pursuit for brickmaking success.

- We will also have a Q&A with Philip Everitt to find out more about his printing experiences in the 1960s-2000s.

Also happening:

- Wayzgoose poster printing workshop

- Wood type poster printing workshop

- Lego letterpress workshop

- Cyanotype workshop with Bina Butcher. Bina is a Perth-based artist and is passionate about printmaking in all its forms, and always searches for new and creative ways of approaching processes that have been around for hundreds of years. Cyanotype is a form of printmaking which uses the sun to expose images onto paper or fabric, resulting in a silhouette of your objects in a distinct dark blue colour. In this workshop you will explore the possibilities of this process using local flora and found objects.

Please bring an apron or old shirt you are willing to get ink and dirt on for the printing workshops.

Note: Wearing face masks will be required indoors.

Warmest regards, Ann Ong of Bright Press

FAQs

What the heck is a WAYZGOOSE?

Wayzgoose was originally an entertainment given by a master-printer to his workmen to mark the beginning of the season of working by candlelight. In later use, it meant an annual festivity held in summer by the employees of a printing establishment, consisting of a dinner and (usually) an excursion into the country. In more recent times it has become a celebration held by printing and printmaking studios/communities where artists, craftspeople, technicians and printers get together to celebrate their work with their friends and families.
