    Event description

Come and experience a fabulous day at Canberra City Farm with your fellow ACT community gardeners!

Costa Georgiardis from ABC's Gardening Australia will also be joining us for the day!

Keynote speaker Lucy Ridge from the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance will speak about the important role community gardens play in a secure food future. She will talk about how gardening fits into the global food sovereignty movement, and specifically how community gardeners can see themselves in that context. The humble tomato will act as the focus to demonstrate why food is political, and why you should get political with your food.

Christopher Smith from Tinderry Mountain Herbs is our second keynote who will speak on the topic "From Weeds to Healing Herbs". Christopher will explain how the plants we commonly label as weeds in our gardens have profound healing benefits. His talk will cover such plants as Dandelion, Cleavers, Chickweed and Yarrow. The talk will cover how to identify and make simple preparations from these plants.

There will be stalls to enjoy, workshops and demonstrations from our sponsors, a session on social media hacks for your garden and an afternoon of open space workshops including:

    • farm tours
    • tour of the LESS (Low Energy Super Shed)
    • how to make a wicking bed
    • compost demonstration
    • waterway friendly gardening
    • biochar

Morning and afternoon tea as well as a fabulous lunch by local business Queer Food is included in the ticket. Please bring your own water bottle, keep cup and bag for some goodies. Also remember you will be spending some time outdoors so dress appropriately for the weather and don't forget your sun protection.

    Everyone is welcome. Fully accessible.

Keep an eye on our website for the full program.

Thanks to our sponsors The National Horticulture Roadshow, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, WaterUps, Koh and PiP Magazine for their generous support.
