High Probability Instructional Strategies: Creating an Actively Engaged Classroom for Students with Challenging Behavior


DETAILS - This workshop will offer concrete strategies for creating effective instruction for students with challenging behaviors. While the focus will be on active engagement, additional strategies related to instruction and classroom management will be discussed, demonstrated, and modeled. Participants will be able to apply these lessons immediately, teach them to others, and feel more successful in the classroom every day.

Session 1 - September 21, 2024 -8:00-11:00am
Strategies for engaging students during instruction including verbal, non-verbal, manipulatives, gestures, and group strategies

Dr. Todd Whitney is an Associate Professor of Special Education in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville. He began his career teaching elementary students with mild to moderate disabilities in resource and collaboration settings. He has taught special education methods, assessment, and classroom management courses for a little over 12 years across three universities (Kentucky and Tennessee). His research areas of interest include evidence-based academic and behavioral interventions for students with disabilities and the effective use of evidence-based instructional practices to increase student engagement.


Session 2 - September 28, 2024 -8:00-11:00 am Strategies related to instruction and classroom management that are foundational to facilitating successful engagement

Dr. Terrance M. Scott is a Professor and Distinguished University Scholar in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville where he directs the Center for Instructional and Behavioral Research in Schools. Having received his Ph.D. in Special Education at the University of Oregon in 1994 (with an emphasis on emotional and behavioral disorders). Dr. Scott has over 100 publications, including five books, on a variety of issues in the areas of behavioral disorders and behavioral support systems. He is a frequent speaker, having conducted well over 1000 presentations and training activities and has been an invited speaker throughout the U.S. and around the world. He is the recipient of national awards for research and leadership in the area of behavioral disorders and has career grant funding of over $34 million.  His research interests focus on school-wide prevention systems, the impact of effective instructional practices, managing student behavior, and scientific research in education.
