2024 School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry Annual Lecture - Speaking from within

The University of Queensland's School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry invites you to attend our 2024 Annual Lecture, Speaking from within. 

Associate Professors Fiona Foley and Stephanie Gilbert, both practicing historians, engage with the complexities of speaking from within and being heard. In our pursuit of truth-telling, we recognise the various truths that shape our history. It is vital that we acknowledge omitted records and actively listen to voices that challenge and disrupt established narratives and spaces.

Professor Lisa Featherstone, Head of School, School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry will chair this important discussion.

Our speakers

Associate Professor Fiona Foley has a national and international profile as a leading contemporary artist and historian. Her work has produced substantial new knowledge around the Queensland Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act (1897), and her numerous exhibitions have shared this knowledge with audiences across the globe. Fiona has exhibited a total of 50 solo exhibitions and 175 group shows; created 14 public art commissions, and her art works are held in 23 collections including The British Museum and the Hood Museum of Art in New Hampshire, USA. Her work comes with a string of accolades. Her monograph Biting the Clouds: A Badtjala perspective on the Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act was awarded the Queensland Premier’s Award for a Work of State Significance in 2021, alongside a Highly Commended in the 2022 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards. In recognition of her very fine achievements, Fiona has been elected an Honorary Fellow in the Australian Academy of the Humanities. Most recently, Fiona was awarded a DECRA for her project, “Investigating the Agency of Aboriginal Frontier War Memorials”.

Associate Professor Stephanie Gilbert is the Associate Dean (Indigenous Engagement) for UQ's Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Associate Professor Gilbert is a theorist, writer and academic in Critical Indigenous Studies including research methodologies. Stephanie is a formidable cross-disciplinary researcher with expertise in the fields of social work, Indigenous higher education and Indigenous epigenetics (and genomics) research. Holding experience in social work, higher education and history she speaks to the interests of Stolen Generations, Indigenous Australians and international indigeneities. Associate Professor Gilbert has been with UQ since 2020, where she has made significant contributions across the realm of academic engagement, but particularly to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander HDR students. She holds grants and has published in all the areas mentioned.
