2025 ALIGN capacity building seminar series: Artificial intelligence for healthcare in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities: Scoping project to explore relevance
Event description
Artificial intelligence for healthcare in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities: Scoping project to explore relevance
About the seminar: In 2023, scientists from CSIROs Australian e-Health Research Centre commenced discussions of how we may address current Artificial Intelligence (AI) principles that are not tailored for healthcare and are overly abstract, lacking consideration of cultural diversity. To this end two Aboriginal scientists Dr Andrew Goodman, Prof. Ray Mahoney along with external contributor Dr Lucy Shinners, sought to scope the relevance of AI to Australian Indigenous communities and identify any concerns associated with its use and deployment in healthcare.
This project employed a consultation methodology with key stakeholders to identify priorities and unanswered questions relevant to AI applications in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander healthcare. We spoke with 53 knowledge holders across four national organisations with a breadth of discipline lens. The project culminated in 2025 with the production of a CSIRO and partner co-authored report revealing three overarching priorities for the future of AI initiatives in Indigenous health.
About the presenter: Dr Andrew Goodman – a proud Aboriginal man from Iningai Country in western Queensland – is a post-doctoral fellow with the CSIRO. His research seeks to explore novel approaches and/or solutions to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health and wellbeing using eHealth. Prior to this, he spent more than 13 years as an Indigenous Healthcare Worker in Queensland alongside rural and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the discipline of cardiac and healthcare services.
