2025 Farhud Commemoration
Event description
The Sephardi Synagogue invites you to join in commemorating the Farhud, the pogrom against Iraqi Jews on June 1-2, 1941.
We will be honouring the memory of Farhud survivors who passed away this year through visual and musical presentations. There will also be tributes to distinguished leader of the Australian Sephardi community Alfred Shaul Gubbay, and Shlomo Mansour who was murdered in the tunnels of Hamas in Gaza.
For those interested, there will be a group heading to the Recollections exhibit at Vivid after the commemoration. This exhibition shows the incredible works of Israeli multimedia artist Dor Zlekha Levy. Recollections brings to life the often-overlooked stories of Sephardi/Mizrahi Jews through three of Dor's celebrated works:
Maqamat - Reviving the sounds of Jewish Iraqi musicians
Shomer - Reimagining Beirut's Magen Avraham Synagogue, and
Omek-Umk - A meditation on language and cultural hybridity
