2025 FFCF Salt Spring Mobile Trailer Seed Cleaning
Event description
FarmFolk CityFolk is excited to be coming back to Salt Spring Island with the Seed Cleaning Trailer. The trailer will arrive on October 8th at the Root Food Hub with bookable time slots until October 10th at which point we will culminate with a community event featuring the Seed Sanctuary Society.
The trailer has several machines inside including: a thresher, a Winnow Wizard, an air column separator, hand screens, a handheld debearder, and the Office Clipper. Although some machines can be used simultaneously, we've found users trial a few machines. So when you book a timeslot you will have access to all of the machines. However many users could do what they needed to with only the hand screens so if you don't need machinery, feel free to drop by and just the screens up until 5 pm on the 8th and the 9th.
Time slots to reserve are:
Oct 8th from 2:30 - 6
Oct 9th from 8- 11, 11:30 - 2:30, 3- 6
Oct 10th from 8- 11
Please note: the trailer needs to be closed by 6 pm on the 8th and 9th
Community event on October 10th from 11:30 - 2:30: After the last bookable time slot has finished you can come join board members of the Salt Spring Seed Sanctuary for a presentation on Community Seed Banks, a look at the evolving role of the Seed Bank at the Root, the importance of Community seed cleaning equipment, and some seed cleaning tips and demos.
The Seed Cleaning Trailer coming to Salt Spring is marked as a free event and we don't want cost to be a barrier to anyone. However, we would greatly appreciated donations for the use of the equipment (to support this initiative into the future) and they can be made via this link: https://revenue-can.keela.co/mobile-seed-trailer-revenue-form.
Salt Spring Island has been part of the homelands of the Hul'qumi’num- and SENĆOŦEN-speaking peoples since time immemorial. These include but may not be limited to: Penálaxeth’ - Penelakut, Quw’utsun - Cowichan, Lyackson, Stz’uminus - Chemainus, Snuneymux, SȾÁUTW - Tsawout, W̱JOȽEȽP - Tsartlip, BOḰEĆEN - Pauquachin, W̱SIḴEM - Tseycum, MÁLEXEȽ - Malahat, and Halalt. It is our hope through strengthening our skills and seed sector we will work towards the rematriation and decolonization of our lands and food landscapes, and want to keep this goal in our hearts.
