Thu, 23 Oct, 4am - 6am EDT

Event description

Join us for an Online Workshop for the 2025 Review of the Disability Standards for Education.

This event is for people with an interest in access and participation in school for students with disability.

What is the workshop about?

The Australian Government is reviewing the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Standards). These need to be reviewed every 5 years.

The Standards help to make sure students with disability can access and participate in education and training on the same basis as students without disability.

They outline what education providers must do to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

Who is the event for?

This event is open to anyone who wants to discuss the Standards as they relate to the primary and secondary school years. This includes:

  • current and former school students with disability (aged 15 and over)

  • parents and carers of school students with disability

  • educators in preschool/kindergarten and primary and secondary school

  • other education professionals, allied health or advocacy organisations with an interest in supporting access to school education.

There are also specific events on other days for students wth disability and educators and about tertiary education. Visit the Department of Education consultation webpage to find links to these events.

How will the workshop run?

The workshop will be run via Microsoft Teams. It will go for 2 hours.

You will have an opportunity to discuss key areas in the Discussion Paper related to access and participation of students with disability in school.

We will use breakout discussions online to focus on different areas and relevant to your interest in the review.

Information about the review is included further below on this page. We will provide an agenda and background reading with your event reminders.

When you register, you will be asked to let us know any accessibility supports or needs you have for participating in this event.

ABOUT THE REVIEW

The review asks whether the Standards are doing their job, and if not, how they can be improved.  You are encouraged to share your thoughts, insights and suggestions on the 3 main topics the review is looking at:

  1. Effective implementation of the Standards: This means how well the Standards are used and followed.

  2. Inclusive decision-making: This means how well students and their families and carers are supported to be involved in decisions.

  3. Clear responsibilities for assessment authorities and course developers: This means having clear guidance so students with disability are able to access and participate in assessments and workplace learning on the same basis as other students.
