Event description

Switch on to Science 2025

Explore the Museum to discover the science that makes things work.

Again, this year, Redlands Coast Museum will hold its very popular Switch on to Science day in conjunction with National Science Week.

It will be held from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Monday 11th August, which is the Ekka holiday for the Redland community.

Switch on to Science 2025 – Where Curiosity Comes to Life!

Get ready to explore, experiment and experience the wonders of science in action! Switch on to Science is Redlands Coast Museum’s much-loved annual event, where vintage technology springs to life. Our passionate museum volunteers will operate a wide variety of working vintage machines and explain the science and engineering behind how they work. You’ll be encouraged to get hands-on—try out the old equipment and discover how technology has evolved over time.

The museum’s science coordinator, Ross Bower, says "Vintage machines are ideal for showing how science works. They're simple, engaging, and most of all—fun to watch and play with!"

This interactive event is designed to spark curiosity for all ages—from young budding scientists to parents and grandparents alike. Whether you’re learning something new or enjoying a nostalgic trip down memory lane, there’s something here for everyone.

What’s On This Year?

2025 brings a huge range of fun, educational activities, including:

  • Look at crystal set – the earliest form of radio
  • Learn Morse code and talk to amateur radio operators
  • Use vintage telephones, switchboards, and a real telegraph machine
  • Visit our old-style lolly shop, plus see how to spin your wool
  • Write with a slate, churn butter, and observe bees in action
  • Look at germs under a microscope and analyse microscopic animals
  • Investigate crime scene chemistry and test your reaction time
  • Try airport and weather satellite tracking, explore ropes and pulleys
  • Peer into the sky with a telescope, and so much more!
