The 2025 WA Flute Competition is set to take place on Sunday, 4th May 2025, at the University of Western Australia Conservatorium of Music. This competition promises to showcase the talents of flute players at every level, providing a platform for performers of all skill levels to participate. The event will feature distinct sections tailored to accommodate players from various proficiency levels, ensuring an inclusive and diverse range of participants.
The competition will be adjudicated by esteemed flautists Andrew Nicholson and Sonia Croucher bringing their expertise and discerning judgment to evaluate the performances.
In addition to the annual The Kate Jolley Memorial Prize for the most outstanding flute performance at the 2025 WA Flute Competition ($200) there will be cash/gift prizes for the winner of each section as well as trophies, medals and certificates of merit. The 2025 WA Flute Competition sections are:
(Note: this year you will need to organise your own accompanist at your own expense to perform)
Performance Experiences (no prizes)
Novice applies to students who have been playing their instrument for 18 months or less
(A) Novice (3 minutes) $30 entry fee
(O) Adult Amateur (5 minutes) $25 entry fee
Grade Sections
(B) Grade 1 - (3 minutes) $25 entry fee
(C) Grade 2 - (3 minutes) $25 entry fee
(D) Grade 3 – (4 minutes) $27 entry fee
(E) Grade 4 – (4 minutes) $27 entry fee
(F) Grade 5 – (4 minutes) $27 entry fee
(G) Grade 6 - (5 minutes) $30 entry fee
(H) Grade 7 – (6 minutes) $30 entry fee
(I) Grade 8 – (7 minutes) $35 entry fee
Recital Sections
Age as of 5th May 2024
(J) 10 years and under (8 minutes) $35 entry fee
(K) 13 years and under (14 minutes) $45 entry fee
(L) 15 years and under (16 minutes) $45 entry fee
(M) 18 years and under (18 minutes) $60 entry fee
(N) Open (20 minutes) $65 entry fee
Ensemble Sections
(P) Primary School Ensemble (5 minutes) $35 entry fee
(Q) High School Ensemble (5 minutes) $35 entry fee
(R) Open Ensemble (7 minutes) $40 entry fee
Piccolo Sections
(S) Junior (4 minutes) $27 entry fee
(T) Senior (6 minutes) $27 entry fee
REQUIREMENTS
For sections (A) (B) (C) (D) (E) (F) (G) (H) (I) (J) (K) (L) (M) (N) (O) (S) and (T) you will need to perform with an accompanist at your own expense.
Sections (A) and (O) to perform one piece (within the time limit) with piano accompaniment of your own choice. Unaccompanied pieces are not permitted. There will be no prizes given in these sections. All performers in Section (A) will be awarded a participation medal.
Sections (B) (C) (D) (E) (F) (G) (H) (I) to perform one piece from the 2023 AMEB exam syllabus with piano accompaniment within the allocated time limit. Unaccompanied pieces are not permitted. The piece may be chosen from either series 3 or series 4 books as well as the manual list.
Sections (J) (K) (L) (M) (N) to perform two contrasting pieces of your own choice with piano accompaniment within the allocated time limit. Unaccompanied pieces are not permitted.
Sections (P) (Q) and (R) to perform a piece of music of your choice within the time limit (no other instrumental accompaniment) Please note that more than one player per part is allowed.
Piccolo Sections (S ) and (T) to perform one piece of your own choice with piano accompaniment within the time limit.Unaccompanied pieces are not permitted. You will need to provide your own accompanist at your own expense. You may perform original music written specifically for the piccolo or a piece from the flute repertoire. Junior section is for AMEB grades 1-4 and senior section is for AMEB grades 5-8.
Rules and Guidelines
There will be a warm up room available for flute entrants only to use before the start time of their section. Please note that the piano is not available in this area and run throughs with your accompanist are not permitted in this area. It is expected that each performer is ready inside the performance space for their section by the time the section starts.
All performers must use an original copy of music or play from memory.
Entrants must perform the piece(s) submitted upon entry.
Time limits are set to be within the maximum time frame and must not go longer or will result in disqualification
Only one entry per person allowed in the Grade sections.
Only one entry per person in the Recital sections.
Entrants are not allowed to perform the same piece in more than one section.
A copy of the music being performed is required for the Adjudicator and must be emailed to wacmconnect@gmail.com no later than Friday 18th April 2025. It must be accompanied with the completed form attached https://nbca.asn.au/files/apra_amcos_photocopy_form.pdf
Electronic backing piano accompaniment is not permitted.
The winners are expected to be present at the 2025 WA Flute Competition Winner’s Concert on Sunday 18th May 2025 at 3pm. Winner’s may be asked to perform the piece from their winning performance.
WINNER'S CONCERT
The Winner's Concert, is scheduled for Sunday, 18th May 2025. This concert will bring together the outstanding performers from each level, highlighting the best of the competition and allowing the winners to shine in a dedicated showcase. Prizes and trophies will be presented as part of this concert.
