Event description
Living in two worlds
Code-switching involves adjusting one’s
style of speech, appearance, behaviour, and expression in ways that will
optimise the comfort of others
in exchange for fair treatment, quality service, and employment opportunities.
– Harvard Business Review
Coined in the field of linguistics, “code-switching” originally meant switching between two languages. Since then, the concept has been broadened to refer to other aspects of cultural identity such as behaviour, mannerisms, clothing and appearance, and their underlying assumptions, perspectives and backstories.
Ultimately, code-switching is the effortful and often exhausting vigilance of fitting in, which so many people from minority cultures have to do on a daily basis in the workplace.
This insightful course reveals the labour of code-switching and how it impacts on staff performance, capacity and wellbeing at work. Regardless of their own cultural origins, participants will learn the extent to which they themselves code-switch and how it impacts self and others.
As a scheduled public training, this course will cover the experiences of Aboriginal, CaLD and other groups. Clients booking custom training may request their preferred focus.
