Ethical risks, data sovereignty & consent in genomics research

This presentation explores the ethical considerations associated with genomic research involving First Nations Australians through the lens of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. While advances in genomic research offer significant potential to improve health outcomes for First Nations Australians, they also raise important questions about equity, governance, and self-determination. Historical experiences of research exploitation, ongoing structural inequities, and unequal power relationships create a risk that genomic initiatives may perpetuate harm if robust ethical safeguards are not in place.
