Heurich House Museum Spiritualism Tour

On Saturday October 10th and 24th step into the world of turn-of-the-century DC and delve into the Spiritualist beliefs and traditions that found their way into the Heurich household. On this special tour of the historic Heurich House, discover Amelia Heurich’s diary references to mysterious “rappings,” family stories of “circles” and the curious details that have shaped the house’s stories for generations.

From the 12 window panes replacing the original 13, to Michael the doll (who was seated in the 14th chair at dinner,) these stories offer a glimpse into a world seeking understanding and ultimately captivated by luck, loss, grief and the possibility of communicating with the unknown. Learn about the international rise of Spiritualism and its connections to figures that included Marie Curie, Mark Twain, Frederick Douglass, and Queen Victoria, while considering Amelia Heurich’s own experiences of grief, fear, and uncertainty.

Rather than simply labeling Amelia as “superstitious,” this tour experience invites visitors to (re)consider the historical and personal context surrounding her beliefs and the ways Spiritualism may have offered comfort and meaning in an uncertain time.

• Tours leave at the exact time noted, guests are not able to join a tour that is already in progress. 

• Tickets are non-refundable.

• Meet your Tour Guide at the Carriage House (Enter the front garden gate and follow the brick path leading to the rear of the garden. The Carriage House will be to your left.)

• Afterwards, grab a Senate Beer - the historically accurate revival of the brand that ruled DC for 100 years - at the museum’s backyard Biergarten.

AVAILABILITY

Tours of the Heurich mansion are only available through a ticketed guided experience, which is limited to 10 people per tour. All tickets must be pre-purchased; no walk-ins available.

ADMITTANCE

Tours leave at the exact listed start time. If you arrive after the tour’s start time, you will not be admitted. Once the Tour Guide brings a group into the historic house, they are unable to leave the group unattended inside for safety and security reasons.

Tours will happen rain or shine, but please note that the Biergarten is open dependent on weather.
