Blending history, performance, and lived experience, The Gospel of Soul is a moving portrait of music as sanctuary, identity, and collective strength. 2. Dreams in Black: With Love from the South to Los Angeles

Dreams in Black: With Love from the South to Los Angeles ticket

      Thu, Oct 1, 1:45pm - 3:05pm CDT

Dreams in Black: With Love from the South to Los Angeles profiles three creatives and HBCU alums from Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia who all relocated to Los Angeles to pursue their dreams of joining the entertainment industry. The film documents their journeys to landing roles they once dreamed of, working at major production companies, for major talent, and entertainment executives while focusing on alignment of self within their roles, the systems they work within, and in life overall. The themes and explored commentary include foundation, welcoming, Black history, culture, and joy, education, family, community, faith, and identity. This film was created after the director experienced the passing of a close friend and fellow filmmaker who was signed up for an artist retreat that she later took his place in, where funding was offered with complete creative freedom for all artists in attendance to creatively respond to the experience of learning about artists, their communities, history, culture, and the challenges faced in their hometown of Asheville, NC before and after experiencing the transformation and erasure of their communities and subsequently their art and identities due to gentrification. The film aims to honor those artists, artists at large who can identify with those themes and experiences, and her late friend, who was extremely integral in her own filmmaking journey but also in creating communities of artists and intellectuals who might not usually cross paths. The film also aims to propel the idea forward that, despite challenges in any part of life or when pursuing a passion, you can absolutely overcome and reach your goals with the proper foundation, mindset, community, and plan, no matter where you come from.

      Fri, Oct 2, 2:45pm - 4:35pm CDT

Beyond Unstoppable - In the heart of DeKalb County, Georgia, a young Somali refugee struggles with grief and anger after losing his father and sister back home. His mother, working two jobs to keep them afloat, longs to be present for her son but is too overworked to be the steady presence he needs. On long train rides to escape his circumstances, he glimpses a soccer field — a flash of hope in a life overshadowed by loss. When a fellow Somali teen notices him staring at the field, she invites him to join her team. As he rises to become their star player, she battles her own isolation at home with her emotionally absent father, still broken by the loss of his wife and son in Somalia. Their lives intertwine on and off the field until a fight forces her father to hear her truth about their home life. On the night of the big game, both parents show up for the children they’ve been failing, and a long-buried secret is revealed: they are each other’s lost spouses, and the teens are not just teammates but siblings. In a single, transformative moment, soccer shifts from being an escape to becoming the force that heals grief, reunites a shattered family, and makes them beyond unstoppable. Bad Gotta Go - When Cole goes off to college and leaves his severely autistic brother (Bobby) and single mother (Felicia) behind, he entrusts his best friend Brick to keep an eye on them. However, as Brick becomes more and more engulfed in street life the two friends start to grow apart, and Brick gets involved with selling drugs. One night after enjoying Felicia's (Cole's mom) home cooking, he gives her some pain relievers after complaining about back pain. Little did he know that shortly after Felicia would die, leaving a helpless and devastated Bobby trying to revive her. Cole then has to return home to take care of Bobby and uncover the unknown surrounding his mother's death. When Cole discovers that Brick gave her Fentanyl, a dangerous turn of events take place, plunging Bobby, Brick and Cole into a brand new reality of death and violence. Fist at Grace - Fist at Grace follows a restless, low ranking high school competitor who is hellbent on receiving her first Speech and Debate award. Before I Let Go - With her wedding only days away, Sophia should be focusing on her "happily ever after." Instead, she is forced to confront the ghost of her past when Justin, the man who broke her heart, appears on her doorstep unannounced. What begins as a tense confrontation dissolves into a raw, overnight odyssey through their shared history. As the sun sets on her final days as a single woman, Sophia must navigate a minefield of: • Unspoken Regrets: The "what ifs" that have lingered in the shadows for years. • Echoes of Heartache: The painful reality of why they fell apart. • The Mirror of Self-Worth: A vulnerable journey to reclaim the identity she lost within their relationship. Trapped between the life she’s built and the love she once knew, Sophia is forced to decide if her upcoming marriage is a true beginning or simply an escape. "The Space Between Us" is a poignant exploration of the messy path toward closure and the courage it takes to choose yourself. Soaring Together: A Tuskegee Airmen Story - Soaring Together is a short film inspired by a true story, centered on World War II Tuskegee Airmen James Shipley of Tipton, Missouri, and Harry Stewart Jr. of Queens, New York. Serving as Stewart’s crew chief, Shipley worked alongside him as the two rose above prejudice and war in pursuit of freedom. The film grounds a national history in lived experience, offering a deeply human chapter in the larger American story as the nation approaches its 250th year. The Text - Tanya, a kind-hearted dreamer and music lover, moves in with her new boyfriend Samuel, a controlling NYC music producer, believing it will help her DJ dreams. Cut off from friends and family for two years, Tanya finally attends her best friend Michelle’s engagement party, where she reunites with Michelle and college friend Taj, who encourages her to DJ. When Tanya defies Samuel’s demands to leave the party, he shows up unannounced and forces her to leave in fear. His rage escalates into a reckless drive that nearly ends in tragedy, giving Tanya a chance to escape. House of Hearts - Three couples experience three different parts of relationship cycle all inside the same house.

They made Nashville their home despite the blatant, harsh realities of deep rooted racism and its cruel impact. Rather than take the easy way, they carved a path of lifetime activism. While recognizable leaders such as MLK, Diana Nash & John Lewis etc. were in the public eye, leaders like the Searcy’s were working diligently ‘behind’ the scenes and continue today well into their 70's. This is the story of a remarkable couple who ‘under the radar’ contributed to vast amounts of ‘change’ in Nashville and explores why we are better if we acknowledge and understand what they contributed.

B.4.L – The Environmental Justice Army | A Hip Hop Community Organizing Documentary - B.4.L – The Environmental Justice Army | A Hip Hop Community Organizing Documentary is a community-driven environmental justice film rooted in Nashville, following grassroots leaders, youth organizers, and residents reclaiming their neighborhoods through collective environmental action. Centered around initiatives like the B.4.L Pathway and HEAL THE BLOCK, the film highlights how communities most impacted by environmental racism are leading real solutions—from urban agriculture and waste reduction to tree planting and climate education. Sites of Memory - As U.S. history becomes controversial to teach in some states, residents of this community come to terms with our past and present in Sumner, Mississippi and Montgomery, Alabama. Becoming Taylor - After a childhood shaped by separation and her mother’s 22-year addiction, 16-year-old Taylor navigates a world that labeled her “at risk.” Through the mentorship of Families of Conviction and the discipline of boxing, she channels her internal rage into resilience. Becoming Taylor follows this young artist and fighter as she reclaims her voice, rebuilds an unlikely bond with her recovering mother, and begins to redefine her future, punch by punch. Pay Day - In a struggling Tennessee town, Patty and Taylor spend their days trapping desperate customers in cycles of debt at a rundown payday loan store. Tired of profiting off their community while drowning in personal crises of their own, the two EZ Loans workers hatch a plan to rob the business that has exploited so many lives, including their own. But as the night of the heist spirals out of control, buried secrets and growing paranoia begin to fracture their partnership. What starts as an act of revenge against a corrupt system quickly becomes a tense battle over trust and how far desperation can push ordinary people. Set against the fading glow of strip malls and commercial decay, Pay Day is a grounded crime thriller about exploitation and the blurred line between victim and perpetrator. My Ozarks Episode 14: Crockett and Tonya - In West Plains, Missouri, Crockett and Tonya Oaks are restoring a deeper sense of belonging through art, memory, and community. As third-generation caretakers of the local Black cemetery and stewards of the historic Lincoln School, they are transforming once segregated spaces into places of healing—and bringing Black history to life through bold public art in a predominantly white rural small town. Dawn - On the anniversary of her parents’ death, Dawn awakens to the quiet ache of a life unfulfilled. She’s spent years drifting — her dreams of becoming a therapist buried beneath grief, her heart walled off behind the comforting rituals of pouring wine at a cozy San Francisco bar. Every glass is a distraction. Every evening, a delicate detour around the pain she refuses to face. But when Kamari — a magnetic, free-spirited nomad – unexpectedly appears, dormant complex emotions surface. Their connection once felt destined, but the secret that shattered them still lingers. As Dawn moves through the echoes of their memories, she’s faced with a choice: hold tight to the safety of certainty and walk away or lean into love to finally reclaim her future and the possibilities in her forever. This is the story of one transformative day — the day she realizes closure isn’t found, but chosen.

    13. No Knock - No Charge? The Amir Locke Story

No Knock - No Charge? The Amir Locke Story ticket

      Sat, Oct 3, 1:30pm - 3:30pm CDT

Referred to as the “Blueprint for justice”, this riveting gut-wrenching film exposes dual police departments, St. Paul and Minneapolis' unmistakable 'culture of coverup' and execution. This documentary features Dr. Eric Michael Dyson, Congresswoman IIhan Omar, Attorney Ben Crump, Roland Martin, Rev. Al Sharpton, Jeff Storms, Debra Watts (cousin of Emmet Till), Activist/Attorney Nekima Levy Armstrong, Activist Marques Armstrong, and is Narrated by Attorney Cannon Lambert who represented Sandra Bland. The story of Amir Locke continues to reverberate across the na.on. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s Amir Locke End Deadly No-Knock Warrants Act was directly inspired by this tragedy. Even more troubling, former Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman publicly acknowledged that in 24 years he had “never reviewed body-cam footage” and relied solely on officer testimony — a practice that contributed to the decision by Freeman and Attorney General Keith Ellison not to bring charges against the officers involved. Our pursuit of justice has not stopped. Most recently, we achieved a major milestone and won our case at the Supreme Court level. Minneapolis decided to allow the courts to determine what the family would be allowed, and we now enter the discovery phase of the lawsuit. This development further affirms the importance and urgency of this film. In July 2025, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a pivotal ruling stating that, “based on uncontradicted allegations, Amir Locke lowered the barrel of his firearm, began raising his left hand, attempted to comply with commands, and never acted in a threatening manner. No Knock – No Charge? is enriched by music from Grammy Award winners Dr. Walt Whitman & The Soul Children of Chicago, The Sounds of Blackness (NAACP IMAGE AWARD NOMINEE), Pastor Darius Brooks, and Kendall Nesbitt, with sound mixing and mastering by Tom Trafalski. The film has earned heartfelt endorsements from Actress Cynda Williams, Actor Hawthorne James, Producer/Actor Ken Sagoes, and Civil Rights Daughter Ruby Shuttlesworth-Bester. Their words speak to the film’s impact: Ken Sagoes: “It brought me back to Emmett Till all over again. Every person on earth should see this film and charges should have been brought.” Ruby Shuttlesworth-Bester: “An excellent feature documentary that is a historical, graphic, and accurate account of man’s inhumanity to man provided by police body cams.

      Sun, Oct 4, 11am - 12:35pm CDT

The villagers of Sayit are about to receive title deeds, marking the first time in centuries they will claim legal ownership of their land. While this is great news for many, 38-year-old Star faces the risk of losing her home. The title deeds are based on kinship ties, and since her parentage is unknown and she is unmarried, her situation is precarious. Things take a turn when Star discovers a photograph of her younger self in ""The World Book of Nomads."" In the picture, a mysterious hand with familiar tribal markings catches her attention, as she recognizes those marks as belonging to a local food seller. Believing the woman to be her estranged mother, Star confronts her, but the woman denies any connection. Desperate to maintain her claim to the land, Star considers several options: finding the foreign photographer who took the picture, proposing marriage to a friend, and signing a morally questionable deal with an NGO. However, this deal puts her at loggerheads with her community.

Are You A Librarian? Black Librarians and Freedom Through Literacy - Are You a Librarian? Uncovers the hidden legacy of Black librarians—from the era of slavery and segregation to today’s battles over book bans and intellectual freedom. Through powerful interviews, archival footage, and expert insights, the film tells the story of how Black librarians transformed underfunded, segregated spaces into vital cultural and educational hubs for their communities. Stolen School - STOLEN SCHOOL confronts the reality that desegregation wasn’t good for everyone. In 1967, the local school district in Evanston, IL, closed Foster School—the all-Black neighborhood school in the historically Black 5th Ward—in the name of integration. Rather than ensuring equal access to resources, this decision displaced generations of Black students, forcing them to be bussed across town while their community was left without a local school. #UnErasable17 - #UNERASABLE17 is directed by Ryquan Ramirez, the mother of Ivyanna Mida Vann. Ivyanna was 17 years old when she was killed on February 3, 2026 by someone she trusted. Her death was initially ruled a suicide. Her mother knows it was not, and she has not stopped fighting to see the record corrected and her daughter's name spoken correctly. Somewhere In Brooklyn - What began as an undercover assignment during the COVID lockdown became the love of his life. But when a police officer reconnects with the woman he fell for, a dangerous figure from his past threatens to destroy their future.

Untold Stories, Unending Struggles, and Unlimited Possibilities ticket

      Thu, Oct 1, 6pm - 7:10pm CDT

In 1924, on a bend of the Cumberland River, the Black National Baptist Convention and the white Southern Baptist Convention did something no one expected: they built a school together. American Baptist College was designed to train Black ministers in the Jim Crow South. It became something else entirely. John Lewis arrived on a free bus ride from Troy, Alabama given to him by Dr. King. CT Vivian and Bernard Lafayette came with hunger in their souls. Under the guidance of Reverend James Lawson, these students organized the Nashville sit-ins and wrote the blueprint for nonviolent direct action that would spread across the country. When Martin Luther King Jr. visited the campus, he said he came to learn. Then the movement ended and the forgetting began. Funding collapsed. Key partnerships dissolved. A mother who had spent her career at the school worried on her deathbed that it would fold. Women who felt called to preach were told they didn’t belong in the pulpit. One of them stood up and said, “I belong where God puts me.” The school did not fold. A hundred years later, a student not yet eighteen years old was asked what excites her about the legacy of American Baptist College. She asked who the next John Lewis would be. She said if the cause of justice calls for her life, she is willing to give it. The flame that was lit on the Holy Hill still burns. This film is the proof.
