Description

This workshop is co-organised by Catherine Geraghty-Slavica of The Canberra Society of Philosophy in Schools SOPHY (ACT) and Dr. Britta Jensen of the Philosophy in Schools Association of NSW and the Centre for Critical Thinking & Ethics at Newington College.

Pre-requisites:

  • A FAPSA Introduction to Philosophical Community of Inquiry Certificate and

  • Having spent at least 6 months using philosophical methods in the classroom.

During this face-to-face Advanced Practice course, P4C teacher educators will help teachers to consolidate and extend their skills in facilitating communities of inquiry and expand their understanding of Philosophy in Schools pedagogy. Specifically,

  • Day 1 will consolidate and extend their skills in planning and using collaborative inquiry-based methods in the classroom with a particular focus on the critical, creative and caring thinking requisite to the development of robust ethical understanding.

  • Day 2 will focus on using questioning to promote deeper knowledge and understanding, tracking classroom discussion, identifying rich concepts, and creating conceptual activities. Philosophical foci will be metaphysics and epistemology.

  • Day 3 will introduce participants to basic forms of reasoning and incorporate them into thinking about various kinds of subject matter. Focus areas include justification and inference, deductive and inductive reasoning, and how to map reasoning to improve student proficiency.

Participants who complete the three-day workshop and all three Advanced Practice associated tasks will earn a Federation of Asia-Pacific Philosophy in Schools Associations (FAPSA) Advanced Practice Certificate.
