Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is the most important and widely celebrated festival for Chinese people around the world, including Chinese Americans in Middle Tennessee.
It is a time to honor ancestors, reunite with family, and visit relatives and friends. Red couplets are hung at doors and entrances to ward off evil spirits, and red envelopes are given to children and elders to wish them good health and good fortune. Lion dances, dragon dances, and street folk dances are performed to bring good luck to the community. Firecrackers were traditionally lit to scare away a legendary beast and mark the beginning of the new year.
We would like to share this joyful and special holiday with everyone in Middle Tennessee. This is a free event is opened to the public. It is supported by the Nissan Foundation, the Tennessee Arts Commission, the Metro Nashville Arts Commission, the Centennial Park Conservancy, many partners and collaborators.
The coming year is the Year of the Goat (also translated as Sheep, Ram, or Buck). In Chinese, all of these are 羊 (pronounced yáng). People born in the Year of the “Yang羊” are considered calm, sympathetic, creative, and highly resilient.
The program includes lion dance, dragon dance, music, songs, arts and crafts, children’s games, Chinese yo-yo, Tai Chi, Kung Fu, kite flying, food trucks, and more.
CAAN thanks all of our supporters, partners, collaborators, and the attendees for making this 12th Annual Chinese New Year / Lunar New Year Celebration an exciting free event for everyone.
