Lineup

Beethoven - Da da da dum (10 & 11 April)
Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 — four notes that changed music forever. One of the most recognised openings in classical music, paired with the blazing energy of Beethoven's Prometheus Overture and Haydn's effervescent Cello Concerto with Kenichi Mizushima who returns for his third SSO appearance — first soloed with us at just sixteen. Experience the full force of a live orchestra driving those famous knocks from darkness into blazing light!

Fate (3 & 4 July)
Tchaikovsky’s emotionally raw Fourth Symphony — a battle between soul and destiny. Before that storm, a world premiere by one of our own: Matthew Chin’s Waltz, written with the sound of this ensemble in his ears. Then James Hillier steps from our own flute section into the solo spotlight for Nielsen’s mercurial Flute Concerto. Home-grown talent, front and centre.

Witches (25 & 26 September)
Enter at your own risk. This concert is a night of shadows, spells, and things that creep in the dark — from the wildest ballet ever written to the most famous skeleton dance in music. Stravinsky’s *Rite of Spring* (in the brilliantly orchestrated Rudolf reduction) still sounds dangerous over a century after it shocked Paris. Saint-Saëns sends Death itself to lead the waltz, Dvořák summons a witch at noon, and we top the evening with Mussorgsky’s terrifying *Baba Yaga* as an encore. Bring a friend. Hold their hand.

Folklores (27 & 28 November)
Stories from the fireside, a journey through the myths and melodies of Eastern Europe — Glinka’s blazing Russian overture Ruslan i Lyudmila, Borodin’s exotic Polovtsian Dances, Smetana’s tale of vengeance Sarka, and Kodály’s riotous Háry János Suite. Colourful, tuneful, and utterly transporting.
