About the Course
The Yamayamarra Aboriginal Accidental Counsellor course is designed for anyone who wants to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experiencing distress, difficult situations, or a crisis.
Participants will deepen their understanding of culture, beliefs, history, and social context, while learning practical skills to:
RECOGNISE
Identify when an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person may be experiencing distress or a crisis.
RESPOND
Provide support in a culturally appropriate, respectful, and compassionate manner using effective communication techniques.
REFER
Guide the person to appropriate cultural, community, or professional services.
Who should attend
Have you ever found yourself supporting your mob, a friend, a customer, client, colleague, or even a stranger who was in distress—and you weren’t sure what to say?
This workshop equips participants with the confidence, cultural knowledge, and practical tools to support First Nations peoples safely and appropriately.
What you will learn
Participants will gain valuable knowledge in:
How to identify someone in distress
How to respond to First Nations peoples in crisis using culturally informed communication
How to ask directly about suicide and respond safely
The importance of self‑care when supporting others
This workshop supports participants to build confidence and cultural awareness while honouring First Nations perspectives on wellbeing and support.
