Description

Feltmaking: Make a Lidded Pouch
With Anita Johnson - part of the 6th Tamworth Textile Triennial - Nature Machine

Sunday 20 September, 10am-3pm
Esther Halliday Studio

Discover the ancient art of feltmaking in this hands-on workshop with Anita Johnson. Used for thousands of years to create functional objects, clothing and shelter, feltmaking is one of the world's oldest textile traditions.

In this introductory workshop, participants will learn the resist method of wet feltmaking to create a seamless hollow pouch with a lid. Using soft wool fibres, warm soapy water and simple hand-working techniques, you'll explore how loose fibres migrate and interlock to form a strong and durable textile.

Throughout the day, Anita will guide participants through each stage of the process while sharing insights into the history, principles and possibilities of feltmaking. The workshop offers a rewarding introduction to a versatile textile practice and an opportunity to create a unique handmade object to take home.

Suitable for complete beginners and those looking to expand their textile skills, this workshop encourages experimentation, creativity and an appreciation for traditional fibre crafts.

Participants will leave with their own handmade felted lidded pouch and a deeper understanding of one of the world's oldest textile-making techniques.
