Description

Plant Sensibilia Machine Performance
With Rebecca Mayo - part of 6th Tamworth Textile Triennial - Nature Machine

Saturday 19 September 10am-4pm
Gallery Forecourt

Join artist Rebecca Mayo for an interactive performance of the Plant Sensibilia Machine, a large-scale hand-operated natural dyeing machine that brings textile-making out of the studio and into the public realm.

Drawing on both contemporary and historic dyeing processes, the machine invites audiences to participate in the creation of naturally dyed textiles. Lengths of fabric, pre-printed with metal salts known as mordants, are rotated through a dye bath infused with plant-based pigments. As the fabric moves through the system, colour develops and hidden images and text gradually emerge through the interaction of plant molecules, water, heat and mordants.

Through sight, smell and touch, visitors can experience the material processes of natural dyeing while exploring connections between people, plants and place. Audience members are invited to turn the handle, move the fabric through the machine and witness the transformation unfold in real time.

Rebecca Mayo's practice uses plant-based dyes and printmaking to address plant blindness and encourage deeper engagement with the living environment. Plant Sensibilia Machine offers a unique opportunity to experience collaborative, site-responsive textile making while reflecting on ecological relationships, care and sustainability.
