9/11 and the War on Terror: 25 Years On

2026 marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. These attacks were shocking at the time, while also ushering in the ‘war on terror’ that saw invasions and occupations (of Afghanistan and Iraq), controversial restrictions on civil liberties and heightened international and national concerns about the threat posed by Islamist terrorism. This roundtable will discuss the legacy of 9/11: its implications for international order, for Australian society and politics, and for approaches to terrorism, radicalization and multiculturalism. Hosted by the School of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Queensland, this roundtable brings together experts on terrorism and international politics to reflect on the legacy of 9/11 25 years on.
