We're doing this one for Dolly.
Dolly Parton was already a global music superstar when she made her feature-film debut in 9 to 5, joining Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin for one of the most entertaining workplace comedies of the 1980s.
Violet, Judy and Doralee are three women working for the same thoroughly unpleasant boss. When workplace sexism, exploitation and sheer frustration finally push them over the edge, they decide to turn the tables on him. What begins as a revenge fantasy soon becomes something considerably more complicated, and considerably more satisfying.
Released in 1980 and directed by Colin Higgins, 9 to 5 was a box-office hit, with Dolly's unforgettable title song earning her an Academy Award nomination as well as two Grammy Awards.
And then there's that cast.
Jane Fonda. Lily Tomlin. Dolly Parton.
Together they are terrific. Fonda brings Judy's nervous uncertainty, Tomlin gives Violet a wonderfully sharp edge, and Dolly's Doralee is warm, funny, smart and completely irresistible.
And yes, we'll be hearing "9 to 5" over the opening credits.
More than 40 years later, the film's comedy still lands, its observations about workplace power still resonate, and the friendship between these three women remains at the heart of it all.
So come for Dolly. Come for Jane and Lily. Come for the comedy, the music and the sheer pleasure of seeing three great performers together on the big screen.
Come and have a fun Saturday night at the movies.
