KOAL is an urgent, funny and deeply moving one-woman theatre show, shining a light on the realities of climate change.

Co-created and performed by Jacinta Yelland
Co-created and directed by Trey Lyford
Original music composed by Ethan Mentzer

Immersing the audience in the middle of the 2019 Australian bushfires, KOAL follows the stories of a baby koala, a coal miner and an Indigenous girl as they desperately strive to hold onto their homes.

Blending comedy and virtuosic storytelling, KOAL takes the audience through laughter and tears as it explores what is lost when your home is erased.

Performed by co-creator, Jacinta Yelland — an acclaimed Australian theatre creator and performer, and a descendant of the Meriam Mer people of the Torres Strait Islands — KOAL will travel to Moonah Arts Centre this July, fresh from hit seasons at Theatre Works (Melbourne) and PhysFestNYC (New York City).

“Physical and evocative, engaging and entertaining… unlike anything I have seen. Yelland is a superb storyteller” — Alex First, thetheatre.au

“KOAL is an experience that has stayed with me long after the final bow. Watching Jacinta Yelland on stage, I was struck by her ability to shift seamlessly between three completely distinct characters. Each of them felt so fully realized, and through them, the show explored the idea of home in a world that’s rapidly changing.” — Jim R. Moore, VaudeVisuals

This show is recommended for audience members aged 8-years-old and above.

Running time: 70 minutes

Warning: Strobe light, themes of climate catastrophe
