Social Design Sydney and the Systems Change Salon are committed to building social and systems change understanding and capacity.

We are very excited to work with the Jeder Institute to support you in your change work, and are offering a masterclass on the Two (2) Loop model from the Berkana Institute. The Berkana Institute, founded by Margaret J. Wheatley and Deborah Frieze, works in communities to build their resilience while their group, environment, or society transitions from one social structure to another.

Learn about the The Two Loop model, a nonlinear theory of change based upon the ideas of living systems. It provides us with insight into the simultaneous growth and decline process that are underway within a system during a transition period.

It is useful in describing the natural and inevitable evolution of a system, organisations or even an idea. It acknowledges that within any system there will always be a flow from the old into the new. At some point in an organisation’s life cycle, new ways of doing/being will arise. This innovation will feel disruptive to the old system and it will try to pull the new ideas back into line. Two loops supports an understanding that this disruption is an essential feature of evolution and that there are worthy roles to play for members in moving from the old into a new paradigm. Berkana’s key activity areas are built into the model: Name, Connect, Nourish and Illuminate.

The model

is useful in complex organisational change processes
supports thinking and action relating to change
helps you to place yourself in the system and see what kind of role you are playing
provides a heuristic for us to better try and recognize and connect the past to the future during a change process
gives us the possibility to try and come to some consensus about where we might be as a group in this process of change and the best actions to take at different stages

She is skilled & passionate about strengthening regional, rural &remote communities, developing community leadership capacity, building community resilience &supporting community members to take action.

Fiona Miller

Fiona Miller is a creative conduit and passionate about seeing people and communities explore and collaborate on all things local, getting people to the same table and sharing skills and knowledge. The ABCD principles and practices underpin all of her work and continue to be educated while educating. Conversations matter and by connecting conversations, amazing things can happen.

The Systems Change Salon

The Systems Change Salon is a new community of practice for the exchange of new ideas, intended as a place for experimentation and doing with tools and approaches from diverse knowledge, drawn from the inspiration of the European Salons of the Enlightenment.

We will host a Salon using the Two Loop Model in September where we will be diving deep, practicing with this tool on some real world challenges - come to this Masterclass first : )
