A cappella Weekend Workshop (Christchurch) 2025 with Tony Backhouse
Event description
A cappella gospel -Tony has led ten gospel tours to the USA to participate in the African American church tradition. He has run vocal workshops in New Zealand, Australia, the UK, USA, Canada, France, Italy, Fiji and Samoa.
Tony works with the passionate and exciting African-American repertoire, focusing on spirituals, gospel songs old and new, choral and quartet styles, and embracing South African church songs, and maybe even some doo-wop, or R&B and pop. The emphasis is on harmony, collective improvisation and freedom of expression.
No music-reading skills are required, and you may record the sessions.
WHAT TO BRING: Please bring your own tea mug/cup and BYO water bottle with water.
MORNING TEA 30' (approx 11.30am)
Teas and and light refreshment will be supplied. Please bring a share plate for one of the days if you feel so inclined.
Unfortunately the Front Room Cafe in the venue does not remain open.
LUNCH 30' (approx 1pm)- BYO lunch. Alternatively The Farmers Market takes place every Saturday morning 9.30am -12.30pm at Mt Pleasant Centre. Fantastic local produce, fresh and vibrant vendors or there are cafes a short drive from the venue (1.2km away)
GETTING THERE: Off street parking available in the area. The venue is on the Sumner bus route for those who prefer public transportation, and some may choose to bike since it's a flat route
TICKETING: Tickets can be purchased at the door $100.00 CASH ONLY (we do not carry Credit card facilities). However numbers are limited and we suggest pre booking.
