A Day for the Deep - Paddle Out
Event description
As surfers, we spend the majority of our time on the coast, surfing waves on sandbanks, points or reefs where the land meets the sea. But the deep sea is calling, the place where those wonderful swells are created and pass through is at risk of exploitation by a destructive new industry called ‘Deep Sea Mining’, threatening vulnerable species, global fisheries, and worsening climate change.
Together as a community of ocean lovers and surfers, we will be gathering and paddling out against Deep Sea Mining on Byron Main Beach (Clarkes Beach Park) at 12 pm.
Come along for a swim or paddle and have a deep moment for the deep sea!
As governments convene for the crucial International Seabed Authority (ISA) meeting in Kingston, Jamaica (July 7 – 25), to decide if deep-sea mining will be permitted in international waters, a powerful global wave of ocean lovers will take to the water in a united call: Stop deep-sea mining before it starts.
Momentum is building, awareness is rising, and resistance is growing. Around the world, communities are standing up to an industry that threatens our ocean, our climate, and our future.
