A Door Ajar #3: 'Erie' by Kevin Jerome Everson (2010)

Presenting a breadth of outcomes, A Door Ajar is an ongoing series of film screenings that focuses on the handmade and the communal, aiming to platform non-commercial approaches to distribution and funding; with a particular interest in alternative ways of seeing and non-narrative approaches. The latest iteration considers Ohio-born, Virgina-based filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson’s feature Erie (2010; 81 min).

Built through a series of single-take, black and white, 16mm sequences, filmed in and around communities near Lake Erie, Everson’s film contains an unwavering conviction in the seemingly undramatic minutes, and seconds that cinema routinely passes over as unworthy of prolonged attention. Presenting scenes that relate to Black migration in the USA, contemporary conditions, folks concentrating on the task at hand, theatre and famous art objects, Erie incorporates a mix of scripted and documentary moments with a persistent, responsive method of filming to shift focus from the fixity of time and space, to the fluid role of the people within.
