Description

Join filmmaker Michal Goldman and musician Hankus Netsky for a screening of Goldman’s 1987 feature documentary A Jumpin’ Night in the Garden of Eden, the first film to document the revival of klezmer music. Klezmer has long since become a world-wide movement, and many of its key proponents have roots in the two foundational bands profiled in the film, Boston’s Klezmer Conservatory Band and New York’s Kapelye. Their founders, Hankus Netsky (Boston) and Henry Sapoznik (New York) were and have continued to be friends and colleagues. After the film we’ll explore questions like: how and why did this lost Jewish musical tradition get revived? Is there a difference between revival and reinvention? How was this film made? How has the music evolved since the film’s making?

Michal Goldman is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, founding Director Emerita of the Boston Jewish Film Festival, and founder of Filmmakers Collaborative. After a career as a film editor, she decided to make a first film of her own, A Jumpin’ Night in the Garden of Eden, about the revival of klezmer music. Her subsequent films live at the intersection of culture, politics, and personal life. She is a proud member-filmmaker of New Day Films, the social issue film distribution cooperative that initiated this program.

A multi-instrumentalist, composer, and ethnomusicologist, Hankus Netsky is former Chair of Contemporary Musical Arts at New England Conservatory, founder and director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and former Vice President for Education at the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, MA. He has composed extensively for film, theater, and television, collaborated closely on musical projects with Itzhak Perlman, Robin Williams, Joel Grey, Theodore Bikel, Robert Brustein, Eden MacAdam-Somer, Rosalie Gerut, and Robert Pinsky, produced numerous recordings, including ten by the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and published his book, "Klezmer: Music and Community in 20th Century Jewish Philadelphia, in 2015.
