Event description

A Library Portal (2025)

Juliet Phraser

6-8pm, Saturday 29 November, 2025

A Library Portal (2025) by Juliet Phraser offers a personal and incomplete insight, through documentary, into the early days of a volunteer-run independent library and arts centre. Collating a series of iPhone recordings, photographs and animations, the film represents an ad hoc archive of library portal volunteer’s conversations, happenings and mishaps.

Filmed and produced intermittently over the duration of two years, Phraser uses her camera as a means for an expanded social practice, accessibility and connection. Only screened in person, A Library Portal honours the space’s offline community building ethos by remaining outside of the internet, where conversation and communal myth are ever-expanding.

Juliet Phraser is an artist, educator, film-maker born raised and based in Naarm/Melbourne. She works across video, drawing, sculpture and social practice. Living with dynamic disabilities and neurodivergence, her practice aims to embody sustainable labour, care and connection as methods to navigate uncertainty. She a graduate of Fine Art Monash Honours (First Class, 2023) and VCA Photography (2022). She currently works as a Kindergarten Art Teacher.

Library Portal, first in Fitzroy now in Northcote, is a non by profit space with over 10,000 borrowable books which reflects consistent, considered donations of labour, books, performances, thoughts, artworks, pictures, furniture, etc. from a community of people unified by a shared belief in the goodness of accessible, open, and communal lifelong learning.

All ticket proceeds will be donated to Library Portal to support the space’s mission.
