Event description
A Sufi Perspective on Meditation, Meaning and the Mind with Dr Aydogan Kars
In our next M3CS seminar, we’ll be joined by Dr. Aydogan Kars, a scholar of medieval intellectual history and expert in Sufism and Islamic theology. With a PhD in Religion from Vanderbilt University, Dr. Kars is also the co-coordinator of the Sufi Studies Academic Network in Australia and a member of the M3CS team.
In this conversation, we’ll explore the rich tradition of Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, and how its teachings, practices, and poetic expressions offer a unique lens on the mind, meaning, and self-understanding.
This seminar will explore:
What Sufism is and what makes it unique as a contemplative tradition
How Sufi practices aim to cultivate presence, awareness, and inner peace
What Sufi perspectives can teach us about the nature of the mind
How meaning, selfhood, and transformation are understood in this tradition
Exploring Meditation, Meaning and the Mind:
This free monthly webinar series offers a deep dive into the realm of contemplative wisdom. Every first Thursday of the month (AEST/AEDT) at lunchtime, immerse yourself in discussions with a diverse panel of thinkers, meditators, researchers, and individuals from various wisdom traditions, discussing topics like mindful parenting, burnout, morality, and the impacts of technology on attention. These sessions, guided by Professor Craig Hassed, conclude with an interactive Q&A, giving you a unique opportunity to engage with the panellists. This series is an open invitation to explore the profound impact of contemplative practices and bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and the complexities of modern living.
