Aboriginal Suicide Prevention Through the Lens of Griefology - Perth
Event description
Join the Healing Centre for Griefology in Perth for Rosemary Wanganeen's groundbreaking workshop "Aboriginal Suicide Prevention Through the Lens of Griefology: A Culturally Responsive Approach to Aboriginal Mental Health"
This 1.5 day workshop offers a profound exploration of the complexities surrounding Aboriginal death by suicide. Facilitated by esteemed Griefologist, Rosemary Wanganeen, the workshop explores the role of intergenerational, suppressed, unresolved grief in Aboriginal communities and its impact on suicide rates.
Through the Seven Phases to Integrating Griefology framework, Rosemary uncovers the social determinants driving Aboriginal disadvantage and suicide, offering a culturally informed pathway toward prevention. Since the Royal Commission into Deaths in Custody, suicide rates in Aboriginal communities have surged, highlighting the inadequacy of Western suicide prevention frameworks. Griefology offers vital insights that can enhance the understanding and effectiveness of health professionals, counselors, medical providers, psychologists, psychiatrists, support workers, liaison officers, social workers, educators, correctional services, juvenile justice, and academic researchers.
Without culturally appropriate approaches, service providers struggle to meet the unique needs of Aboriginal people. As a society, we must confront a difficult truth: current psychological and psychiatric models fail to address the complexities of Aboriginal disadvantage and grief, leaving families in a cycle of suppressed unresolved grief, disorientation, and isolation. Join us at a workshop to gain valuable insights and deepen your understanding of the unique challenges surrounding Aboriginal death by suicide.
Attendees will gain awareness and understanding of:
- Griefology as a ‘trauma’ informed model providing a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the cause of Aboriginal disadvantage
- Intergenerational factors driving ‘Aboriginal disadvantage’
- How intergenerational suppressed unresolved grief and its impact on contemporary losses and unresolved grief for Aboriginal people
- Cultural biases and barriers for Aboriginals accessing mainstream services
- Practical strategies to ensure your practice is culturally safe and inclusive
- Strategies to help move from Aboriginal disadvantage to Aboriginal prosperity
“This has been one of the best learning days I have experienced. I enjoyed Rosemary’s style of teaching, role modelling respect, intelligence, quiet wisdom and thank her for sharing her learnings story and way of thinking.”
“As I am a Suicide Prevention Trainer, it was her deep spiritual INSIGHTS that were gold!”
“I learnt so much that will benefit me at work and in my psychology studies, particularly the ‘new take’ on the grief stages, which is much more practical.”
