Above the Law: The US and the International Criminal Court | Buffett First Friday Lunch with Daniel Krcmaric

The Roberta Buffett Institute hosts a faculty research lunchtime talk series on the first Friday of every month. Faculty members give a half-hour talk intended for a broad, multidisciplinary audience of Northwestern students, faculty and staff, followed by a conversational Q&A. 

March’s Buffett First Friday Lunch will feature Daniel Krcmaric, Professor of Political Science and Law at Northwestern University's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.  

Professor Krcmaric will discuss the tumultuous relationship between the United States and the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC, one of the world's most prominent international institutions, is a tribunal designed to prosecute the perpetrators of atrocity crimes: genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Many hail the ICC as one of the international community’s crowning achievements, but the US has long viewed it as a dire threat. For example, the Trump administration is currently imposing sanctions on several ICC prosecutors and judges. Krcmaric will discuss his new book Above the Law, which analyzes American opposition to the ICC and ultimately concludes that American fears of the Court are overblown. He will also cover his ongoing research surveying American foreign policy elites on their views of the ICC.
