AccessHack 3.0
Description
About Access Hack 3.0
Innovation Central Canberra (ICC) is partnering with Evelyn Scott School to bring Access Hack 3.0 to Year 5 students. We’re looking for University of Canberra students to volunteer as mentors and facilitators.
In the 'Our Spaces' project, students work in small teams to redesign a space in their school so it is more inclusive. They look at what already works, who the space serves well, who it could serve better and then design an improvement.
Teams build prototypes from Lego and recycled materials, add an interactive element coded on a Micro:bit (a sensor, light, display or sound) and pitch their ideas.
Your role as a mentor
The students lead the thinking. You help them turn it into something real:
• Help teams organise, explain and refine their ideas
• Support Micro:bit coding and prototype building
• Give practical, encouraging feedback
• Coach teams to pitch their ideas with confidence
You don’t need coding expertise. If you’re patient and curious and enjoy working with young people, you’ll be a great fit.
Dates and times
Tuesdays, 12:10 to 2:50pm (includes a 30 minute break)
• Tuesday 24 November
• Tuesday 1 December
Fridays, 1:30 to 2:50pm
• Friday 27 November
• Friday 4 December
Commitment: at least two sessions. You’re welcome to join as many as you like. Choose your preferred dates when you register.
What you’ll receive
• An ICC Certificate of Recognition
• A gift card for each day you attend
• Hands-on experience in mentoring, facilitation and STEM education
• A great addition to your CV (especially if you’re studying education, psychology, IT, engineering, design or health)
Who can apply
This opportunity is designed for current University of Canberra students who:
• Are Australian citizens
• Come from an equity background, for example first in family to attend university, low socioeconomic background, regional or remote background, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, living with a disability, or non-English speaking background
• Have an ACT Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration, or are happy to apply for one
Wondering if this is for you? We’d love to hear from you. Email innovationcentral@canberra.edu.au and we’ll happily talk it through.
Getting ready for your first session
• ACT WWVP registration. Every mentor needs a WWVP to work with students. If you don’t have one yet, simply apply for a volunteer registration, which is free. Once you’ve applied, your application number is all you need to get started.
• Code of Conduct. Read and sign the ACT Education Volunteers and Visitors in Schools Code of Conduct. We’ll send it to you.
• School forms. Complete any volunteer forms the school requires. We’ll guide you through these.
• Sign in and out. Sign in and out at the school office on every visit.
Child safety All mentors follow ACT Education’s child safety requirements. Teachers stay responsible for students at all times. Mentors work within sight of school staff and do not contact students outside school, including on social media. Student information stays confidential.
What to bring
• Your WWVP card or WWVP application number
• Your UC student ID or photo ID
• A water bottle
What happens after you register?
We’ll email you to confirm your place and your session dates. You’ll also get the Code of Conduct, the mentor information sheet, and a short briefing on Micro:bit basics and what to expect.
Registrations close Friday 20 November. Places are limited, so register early!
