Accounting 101 for Artists
Event description
Accounting 101 for Artists
Thursday July 10. 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Unassigned Gallery, Brunswick. Pay as you feel to be accessible to all!
Preparing for tax time can feel overwhelming—especially when the systems weren’t built with artists or freelancers in mind. This workshop is here to break it down. Accounting 101 for Artists is a practical, no-shame session for artists, community organisers, and freelancers who want to better understand how to manage their income, track expenses, and feel more in control of their finances.
We’ll break down the basics of bookkeeping and how to build simple systems that support your practice. We’ll also cover what you can claim at tax time, what the ATO actually needs from you, and how to approach tax season with clarity—not fear.
This session offers practical tools, but also a political reminder: understanding these systems allows us to move through them with more autonomy, clarity, and collective power.
"The Government takes enough from us already, it's time to educate ourselves and take back."
We’ll cover:
How to track your income and expenses (with a practical template to keep)
What deductions artists and freelancers can actually claim
ABNs, sole trader basics, and navigating the ATO
Sustainable admin habits to support your creative work
This workshop is beginner-friendly and there’ll be space for questions, reflection, and small group discussion. OFFICE HOURS attire is welcome but not mandatory. Please bring a notebook with you :)
Presented as part of OFFICE HOURS at Unassigned Gallery. 7 days of hands-on workshops, skill sharing and knowledge building for creatives.
