Nongkrong 2025: Aceh Body Percussion Workshop
Event description
In this workshop, Suara Dance, Australia’s leading Indonesian dance and music company, introduces the rhythmic art of Acehnese body percussion. The workshop focuses on Ratoh Duek, a practice that combines percussive sounds created through claps, slaps, singing, and synchronized movements.
Participants will learn the foundational techniques of these unique dance styles, exploring how rhythm and movement blend to create a shared, collective experience.
The workshop also includes a lesson in Randai—a traditional theater form from West Sumatra that incorporates Galembong pants to produce rhythm and sound. Participants will create rhythmic patterns together while learning basic pencak silat (martial arts) movements from the region.
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement and mobility and bring a yoga mat. Mats will be provided for those without one.
This event is open to all ages. Everyone is welcome, and no prior experience is necessary.
