Event description
“Tafenoquine for vivax malaria elimination” with Dr Aung Pyae Phyo
This presentation shares early insights from a tafenoquine mass drug administration (MDA) pilot in a high-burden P. vivax setting on the Myanmar–Thailand border. It highlights the operational feasibility, safety, adherence patterns and community acceptability of single dose tafenoquine in single round of MDA. Preliminary data show reduced P. vivax incidence one-month post-MDA, though longer follow-up and molecular testing are underway. Cost drivers and potential programmatic efficiencies are also discussed. This work provides critical groundwork for future scale-up of radical cure strategies in malaria-endemic regions.
“Hidden malaria transmission among Myanmar migrants in Thailand” with Dr Pyae Linn Aung
Thailand has seen a malaria resurgence since 2022, with nearly half of cases imported by Myanmar migrants. Yet this visible burden hides a larger problem: many migrants live far from health services, carry asymptomatic infections, and remain undetected by routine surveillance. Limited vector control further risks sustaining localized transmission. This presentation will reveal evidence on these hidden reservoirs, explore their implications for malaria elimination, and highlight targeted strategies to strengthen surveillance and close critical gaps in reaching migrant communities often excluded from current health systems.
