WORLD MUSIC IN A TRUE FOLK ROOTS FUSION

Prepare your dancing feet, vocal chords and heart! Here come Across the Great Divide, featuring traditional, contemporary and original songs and tunes from Celtic and Americana roots.

Join Karen Jones, Tony Burt and Hanna Wiskari Griffiths as they visit Balcairn Hall in September..

Americana dobro player, guitar master and composer Tony Burt, Scots traditionalist on harp, vocals and guitar Karen Jones, and Scandinavian soprano sax player Hanna Wiskari Griffiths bring together instruments and genres which seldom grace the same stage, weaving Celtic airs and Americana traditions into high energy dance tunes, complete with social comment and heritage. And their message through it all is their love and respect for the shared traditions, friendship, community, unity and whakapapa. A true folk roots fusion!

An Across The Great Divide concert isn’t a quiet affair. Strap yourself in for a wild, toe tapping and emotionally laden journey, perfectly held together by their passion for their traditions.

This is Across the Great Divide’s second tour with Arts on Tour New Zealand and their previous show at Balcairn was a huge success!

A community gem for nearly a century

The Balcairn Public Hall began life in 1926 after several years of community fundraising, to create a memorial site for those lost in WW1. It quickly became a beacon for social activity.

Over many ensuing years, the hall was used for community dances, fancy dress balls, baby and kitchen showers, local indoor sports such as table tennis and indoor bowls and so on.

By the turn of the century, however, the hall was in need of significant repairs. Something had to change and a new committee of locals was established in 2010. The ownership of the hall was transferred to an incorporated charitable society. Significant fundraising efforts resulted in restoration works including a new roof, re-cladding and kitchen renovation.

Today, the hall's reputation as a great community venue continues to grow thanks to the hard working committee, elected annually from the local community.
