In an extraordinary year of online activity, The Boite presented over 50 digital shows, most of which are still available to watch. 

Access to individual concerts is priced at $15/show. Package 5 or more concerts, and the price will drop to just $5 for each.

Award-winning singer Karen Knowles presents a unique heart-warming connected performance for Earth Hour 2020.

Melbourne Amplified Strings with Sarita McHarg

MAS are Anita Quayle (cello) and Xani Kolac (violin). They play music that shifts paradigms and explores the versatility of amplified, stringed instruments. They join forces with sitarist Sarita Mcharg to push the sonic boundaries of what is possible for stringed instruments.

Chuei Yoshikawa, Nick Charles & Leigh Sloggett

Chuei San is one of Japan’s leading acoustic guitarists, with numerous recordings and concerts at home and abroad. Nick Charles is known internationally as “Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic blues and roots guitar music”. Leigh Sloggett has been playing guitar since the age of 12 with his music crossing the genres of blues, contemporary folk and instrumental.

2020 Matsudo Week Concert: Mion Kamei and Brandon Lee

The Boite's 2020 Matsudo Week concert focuses on Okinawa, the southernmost island of Japan, somewhat isolated from the mainland with a warm tropical climate. Okinawan music uses a different scale, the folk music is upbeat and catchy. Featuring the Brandon Lee koto ensemble, Mion Kamei (Sanshin - Okinawan Shamisen), Ichimadin (Sanshin, Taiko and Shinobue) and Anne Norman (Shakuhachi).

East of West

A captivating new take on the fusion between world music and jazz, playing original compositions inspired by the music of the Mediterranean and Balkans. Goran Gajić on double bass, Philip Griffin on oud and Malindi Morris on percussion.

The Lost Clog

The Lost Clog perform the songs their parents and grandparents brought from Lithuania in post war waves of migration. The Clogs’ contemporary interpretations breathe new life into wonderful old songs and dances. They sing songs of harvest, love, talking horses, ruined rue gardens, amorous toads, drunken godesses, drunken sparrows and drunks.

Entre Tango

Entre Tango sets out to present a unique bitter-sweet blend of the passion and melancholy of Tango and Folk music from Argentina, with special guest Julian Scheffer on guitar. With poetry readings from Grace de las Nieves and Jaime Wilson, and a virtual tour of Magnet Galleries’ current exhibition.

Alejandro and Tash Vargas

Chilean-born musician, Alejandro Vargas loves any opportunity to perform with his talented daughter Tash. They featured together in The Boite 40th Birthday celebrations and this online concert offers another opportunity to catch their combined repertoire of songs in Spanish.

Yuval Ashkar and Sarita McHarg

Oud player Yuval Ashkar embraces the music of the Middle East with his sublime deep voiced instrument. His repertoire embraces music from Turkish, Arabic, Armenian and Israeli traditions. Sarita McHarg has more than 20 years of musical experience with Western and Indian musicians. She has given countless recitals internationally as a classical sitar & surbahar instrumentalist and as a folk & classical vocalist. In this concert Yuval and Sarita explore connections between their music.

La Mauvaise Reputation

French gypsy swing virtuosos, regarded as Australia’s most authentic interpreters of the beautiful melodies of classic French chanson, hot jazz and up-tempo 30’s swing. Take a trip through time to La Belle Paris, with music and poetry readings.

Avaye Rood

Persian musician Amir Kaveh has drawn together artists based in Canada and Iran for a concert of Avaye Rood Ensemble, part of The Boite’s Adapt not Cancel series in the Covid 19 lockdown. Performing with him will be: Pegah Kheirdoush, Behzad Ansari, and his brother Siavash Kaveh.

Poems and Pipes: Matthew Horsley and Colin Ryan

Matthew Horsley plays uilleann pipes, a member of the family of small pipes. Uilleann pipes are bellows blown, and have sweet, mellow tones. Australian writer and broadcaster, Colin Ryan writes in the Irish language. As part of The Boite’s Adapt not Cancel response to the Covid 19 lockdown, Colin and Matthew will present an online performance on August 30th.

Zulya and the Children of the Underground Trio

After years of travelling the world and sharing her original music with audiences all over, Zulya now invites the world to come in and join her at her most intimate, as she recalls the Tatar songs she and her parents, aunties and uncles would sing around the table during her childhood. With Zulya Kamalova on vocals, Andrew Tanner on bass and Anthony Schulz on Accordion.

Luke Plumb and Stephen Lalor

From Tasmania and NSW, come two of our finest mandolin players, collaborating across musical genres and state borders.

Australian Shakuhachi Festival Concert

Featuring, from Japan, Kazushi Matama and Kaoru Kakizakai, and Australia-based Lindsay Dugan. This collaborative concert brings together artists who taught at this year’s online Shakuhachi Festival, a collaboration from Australia and Japan.

Unknown Mirrors: Miyama McQueen-Tokita and Ryan Willams

UNKNOWN MIRRORS is the unexpected combination of koto, Japanese zither (Miyama McQueen-Tokita) and recorder (Ryan Williams). The two ancient instruments produce an utterly unique sound world based on original compositions and masterful improvisations.

Sweet Sound Ensemble

Persian-Australian singer, Shirin Majdteymouri has taken her performances across the world and the world is her source of inspiration. She sings in Farsi, Turkish, Spanish and English, drawing on the musical traditions of those cultures.

SENES Flamenco

Dancer Aya Kitaoji of Senes, understands song and dance as a form of story-telling. Motivated by the oriental concept of the 5 Elements of Existence (Earth, Fire, Air, Water, Space) and its relationship with our inner and outer world, S.E.N.E.S. explores its parallel concepts; Solitude, Essence, Necessity, Evolution and Synergy through flamenco dance, music and song.

Iaki Vallejo Quartet

Iaki Vallejo sings contemporary original songs, informed by her musical experience as a descendant of the diverse ethnicities that populated Colombia after colonisation. Her singing is warm passionate, laid back and intensely rhythmic. She crosses barriers of language and mean-ing to awaken something deep in her listeners.

Song Appetit with Stephen Taberner

Charismatic choir leader and social activist Stephen Taberner shares songs and stories from his diverse portfolio of interests in double bass playing, songwriting, playback theatre, clown and other pursuits.

Song Appetit with Yuval Ashkar

Israeli-born composer, oud player, percussionist and vocalist, who synthesises Turkish, Iraqi, Egyptian and Maghrebi influences into his oud playing, creating a distinctive style.

Song Appetit with Xani Kolac

Fuelled by a fiercely limitless vision for the magnitude of her craft, violinist and collaborator, Xani Kolac is amongst the most celebrated musicians of her generation. To celebrate the launch of her latest single, Xani will join us for dinner and share both some of her music and of her journey at the next instalment of the Song Appetit series.

Song Appetit with Linsey Pollak

Continuing with the Song Appetit series, The Boite offers you just that. On July 15th, Lisney will join us for dinner and share music and stories of his fascinating career as a musician, instrument maker, composer, musical director and community music facilitator.

Song Appetit with Oscar Jimenez

Born in Colombia and based in Australia since 2000, Oscar Jimenez is a singer, songwriter and music producer, was nominated for an Aria in 2008 with his band Watussi and won the International Songwriting Competition in 2012 and 2016 for his compositions “Isabela” and “Vuelve a Nacer”. For Song Appetit, Oscar will share stories from his musical journey and perform acoustic originals as well as a taste of his latest productions of his electro-folk project “ChibCha Sound System”.

Song Appetit with Anne Norman

This month's Song Appetit will feature Anne Norman, a shakuhachi performer, improviser and composer, working as a soloist and collaborating with musicians, dancers, actors, poets, visual artists, installation artists and tea masters.
