What I learned in class today: Addressing knowledge gaps in the classroom Fall 2026

Designed by the UBC’s Indigenous Initiatives Team at the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT) and hosted by Capilano University’s CTE, the What I Learned in Class Today: Addressing Knowledge Gaps will support faculty to develop awareness, identify the impact, and design tools to address knowledge gaps related to Indigenous histories, experiences, and realities. This is the second workshop in a two-part series, though participants are welcome to take them in any order.

In teaching and learning environments, knowledge gaps often show up as unintended harm including problematic comments, silences, misconceptions, or conflict especially when there is not a shared foundational knowledge of Indigenous histories and realities. Addressing this divide can strengthen classroom learning and reduce the likelihood that the emotional and intellectual responsibility to educate falls to Indigenous students.

Instead of providing informational content to “fill in” knowledge gaps, this workshop supports faculty to notice when they emerge and develop strategies with colleagues about how they might prepare.

Participants can expect to listen to stories shared by students and faculty at UBC’s Vancouver campus, brainstorm and discuss teaching and learning activities, and engage in reflexive praxis. We hope you leave with an attentive eye, practical language, and strategies for when knowledge gaps inevitably appear.

Arrive at 1:00pm to complete your pre-work or join at 1:30pm for the Opening Circle.  

Workshop Learning Outcome:

1. Develop awareness of what a knowledge gap is in relation to Indigenous histories, experiences, and realities, and how it shows up in learning and classroom environments.

2. Identify the impact knowledge gaps have in student learning and classroom environment

3. Design pedagogical tools to start addressing knowledge gaps in the classroom
