Event description

Join us at Kerry Street Community School in Perth, Western Australia as we proudly host the 2024 Australasian Democratic Education Community (ADEC) Conference on September 21st – 22nd.

The ADEC Conference welcomes learners of all ages, along with individuals, schools, educational groups, and communities interested and involved in democratic, progressive, and alternative education. It serves as a gathering point for like-minded individuals to connect, share ideas, practices, perspectives, and stories. The conference is not only open to members; we welcome all those whose values align with or are interested in democratic education to attend.

As we prepare for the conference, we are in the process of confirming speakers and finalising a schedule. Currently we have confirmed Ron Gorman (Doctor of Education), and Marg Pontin.

Ron Gorman brings extensive experience in teaching and leading a variety of schools in WA and Vic, with a particular interest in small independent schools. He has played an integral role in numerous independent schools, including Kerry Street Community School. Ron will share his insights and knowledge on the role of our schools in today's education landscape. Stay tuned for more details!

Marg Pontin is one of the few trainers in Australia certified by the Center for Nonviolent Communication. Since 2004, she has trained nationally and internationally with world leaders in Nonviolent Communication, mediation, organisational learning and development, and strategic planning and teamwork. Marg will offer valuable insights into NVC in education, addressing topics requested by you. Attendees will receive a form let Marg know what you are interested in hearing about.

So, how does a Democratic Education Conference work? ADEC conferences have a unique flavour, featuring a range of speakers organised by the host school. Additionally, there are open spaces for attendees to co-create the program based on their interests, sharing what they have to offer and learning from others in the community. There will also be a range of organised and child-led activities for kids under 12.
