Within an Australian context, Lutruwita / Tasmania provides a set of unique conditions within which to practice architecture and allied disciplines. This geographic and cultural isolation can be attractive from the outside, being home to rich cultural heritage, a distinctive built history, extraordinary flora and fauna, and stunning natural terrain. Regardless, the scale and pace of development in Lutruwita / Tasmania precludes expertise in a single project type. Designers are asked to be proficient in many project typologies to ensure survival on the periphery. How have practitioners both historically and in the modern day understood this context, and made critical adjustments in response? How might somebody choosing to make a life and practice here approach these circumstances? What makes a critical practice here in Lutruwita / Tasmania?

ADJUSTMENT asks that we look across the changing face of Tasmanian architecture and architectural practice, and provides examples of how we might respond.  Not all contemporary challenges are covered, nor are all solutions provided. This event is a celebration of the modern working built environment professional. Whether through engagement in research, exploration of alternative ways of practice, whether we are measuring, intervening and applying restraint, each speaker provides a new perspective on how to make a building, or a practice, or a life, here.

The event’s creative directors Carly McMahon and Sam McQueeney are thrilled to bring you a varied and forward-thinking program of talks and events. Carly McMahon is a Senior Architect with extensive experience delivering public, cultural, education, community and sporting projects. She remains committed to creating inclusive, enduring and meaningful public architecture that enriches communities and strengthens connections to place. Sam McQueeney is an Architect, and Director of MMO, living and working in Nipaluna / Hobart. He believes in building small, forcing each idea and intervention to punch above its weight.

Presenters include:

• Ross Brewin: Design and Research: How can we reset, repair and reimagine our relationship with the built environment through architecture and urban planning.

• Belén Chiravella: Designing around the World: Where the unexpected is part of the brief.

• Angus Stewart: Designing with the Australian Palette: Innovative native plant breeding for a more resilient landscapes and urban places.

• Richard Jarman: Designing at the Edge: Delivering a New Research Station for Macquarie Island.
  

THE LOCATION
Long before European arrival, the area—known as Nipaluna—was inhabited for over 40,000 years by the Muwinina people. After being established in 1804 as a British colony, it transformed from a heavily fortified penal outpost into a commercial hub driven by whaling, sealing, shipbuilding, and agriculture, officially gaining city status in 1842. The historic city of Nipaluna / Hobart is on Muwinina land, nestled between the towering peak of kunanyi / Mount Wellington and the River Derwent, Hobart is a collection of distinct suburbs and towns, shaped by its rugged maritime geography, and rich colonial heritage. 

Join us at the Moonah Arts Centre, a venue that supports and promotes arts and cultural development within the City of Glenorchy and Southern Tasmania. The establishment of this venue and organisation in suburban Moonah, 5km North of the Hobart CBD, helped fuel the beginning of a thriving local art scene. They provide a welcoming space for the community to meet, collaborate, participate in art and culture and share their experiences and stories. The generous central outdoor terrace, adjacent workshop space and civic forecourt provide break-out spaces for conversations with technical experts and delegates during program breaks.

FRINGE EVENTS | THURSDAY 25 & SATURDAY 27 FEBRUARY
A fringe program of optional events is being provided on the Thursday and Saturday offering the opportunity to engage with the local area in a fun and relaxing way. Fringe event registration will become available closer to the event and full event ticket holders will be notified. Full event ticket holders have access to all fringe events, usually at no additional charge, though RAA may seek to cover costs incurred for specific sessions if required.

RAA members attending can access a 10% discount on Non Member tickets for fellow practice staff. Discount code is available in member area.
