Advance Your Advocacy Practice-Best practice in working with LGBTIQA+ people with disabilities
Description
Join DARU for an engaging Advance Your Advocacy Practice session on Best practice in working with LGBTIQA+ people with disabilities with Inclusive Rainbow Voices.
Disability advocates often work with LGBTIQA+ people with disability - probably more often than they know! LGBTIQA+ people with disability can be extremely cautious about who we disclose our sexual orientation, sex and/or gender to, fearing discrimination or stigma. And this can compound difficulties in accessing appropriate services, a sense of community and belonging, and the kinds of service responses we need. This session will provide:
An overview of the LGBTIQA+ acronym & the difference between sex, sexual orientation & gender
How to provide an open and welcoming service to LGBTIQA+ people with disability
Key data about LGBTIQA+ people with disability
Key issues that LGBTIQA+ people with disability may present with.
About the presenter:
Dr Jess Cadwallader (she/they) is the CEO of Inclusive Rainbow Voices, a national organisation of and for LGBTIQA+ people with disability. They are a highly experienced leader across advocacy, research and policy contexts, with particular strengths in systemic advocacy, intersectional marginalisation and identity, and service system improvement. She is passionately committed to social justice, and to the creation of community that can support and sustain it.
Please note: this session will be Auslan interpreted and recorded. The recording will be available on the DARU website after the session along with the PowerPoint presentations and any additional links or materials provided as part of the session.
